On SHOUTcast, SimplyRadio had become a top hip-hop and reggae destination. That's where BigRadio found it.
In 1999, BigRadio's founder John Billington recruited Kenny Scan to build the network's hip-hop station — a weekly salary, serious bandwidth, and the resources to grow it. For a DJ who'd been keeping a 24 kbps stream alive on grit, it was the first time the music had machinery behind it.
"A weekly salary, serious bandwidth, and the resources to grow it."
The network looked as good as it sounded. BigRadio's original web designer, Z, built the site and its custom pop-up player skins — genre by genre, pixel by pixel. The logos and artwork on these pages come from his archive.
Kenny counts Mark Lewis among his influences — a friend and a supporter.
When the BigRadio era ended, SimplyRadio went independent again — and never stopped.
